"Mastering the Art of Psychology: Essential Skills for Today's Psychologists"

 On February 12, 2025, Department of Psychology, Sree Narayana College hosted the seminar titled "Mastering the Art of Psychology: Essential Skills for Today's Psychologists." The event commenced at 10:30 am in the seminar hall, many students and faculty members attended the seminar, eager to enhance their understanding of psychology. The R. Shanker memorial spectrum seminar series began in 2004 and has been conducted annually. This year's seminar, organized by the Department of Psychology titled "Mastering the Art of Psychology: Essential Skills for Today's Psychologists," follows this tradition, providing a platform for students and professionals to engage with interesting topics in psychology. The seminar featured an insightful presentation by Sujith Babu, a renowned clinical psychologist and assistant professor in the Department of Psychology, University of Kerala. He elaborated on the essential skills required for emerging psychologists, emphasizing the importance of practical knowledge, critical thinking, adaptability and effective communication in the field. His engaging presentation style captivated the audience and encouraged discussions on the practical applications of these skills in real-world scenarios.





In addition to the keynote address, the program included a segment dedicated to student paper presentations. Students from the psychology department showcased their research findings and innovative ideas, contributing to the seminar's collaborative atmosphere. Topics ranged from mental health awareness to the neuroscience behind mindfulness and meditation, reflecting the current trends and challenges in psychology. The paper presentation program was successfully conducted with the participation of four final-year psychology students, who presented their research on diverse and insightful topics. The following papers were presented during the session:

 1. Motivation and Health Awareness Presenter: Navami Santhosh Navami Santhosh delivered an engaging presentation on the relationship between motivation and health awareness, focusing on the domain of health psychology. She highlighted how motivation plays a crucial role in promoting healthy behaviours and preventing illnesses. The discussion also encompassed psychological interventions that enhance health awareness and self-care practices.



2. Psychological Trauma Presenter: Ndulamo Johannes Molathwa

Ndulamo Johannes Molathwa presented a well-researched paper on psychological trauma, addressing its causes, effects, and coping mechanisms. The presentation covered different types of trauma, including childhood trauma, PTSD, and the impact of traumatic experiences on mental health. The session emphasized the importance of early intervention and therapy in managing psychological trauma.



 3. Religiosity and Resilience Presenter: Karuna Narasimha Moorthy 

Karuna Narasimha Moorthy explored the intersection of religion and psychological resilience, shedding light on how religious beliefs and practices contribute to coping mechanisms in times of adversity. The presentation provided valuable insights into the psychological benefits of spirituality and faith, as well as their role in mental well-being and stress management.



4. Neuroscience of Mindfulness and Meditation: Understanding Mechanisms and Applications Presenter: Anuradha S. Dileep

Anuradha S. Dileep delivered an insightful presentation on the neuroscience of mindfulness and meditation, discussing the underlying mechanisms and practical applications. The presentation included neurobiological mechanisms, the effects of mindfulness on stress reduction, and its therapeutic applications in psychological interventions.




The paper presentation program was an exhilarating event that provided a platform for students to showcase their research and analytical skills. The session encouraged meaningful discussions, fostering a deeper understanding of various psychological concepts. The presentations were well-received, and the participants actively engaged in discussions, making the event a great success. The seminar concluded with a Q&A session, allowing participants to engage directly with the speaker and presenters. Overall, the event was a resounding success, fostering a deeper understanding of the essential skills for today's psychologists and encouraging students to pursue their interests in the field.
