An invited talk on "Introduction to Standardisation and Quality Assurance in Air Pollution Measurement Equipment"

The Department of Physics, Standard Club, and IIC, in collaboration with IQAC, hosted an invited talk on "Introduction to Standardisation and Quality Assurance in Air Pollution Measurement Equipment" on February 28, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. in the Seminar Hall. The event was organised as part of the National Science Day Celebration 2025.

The initial session began at 10.30 a.m. with a prayer. Dr. Aranya S. ( HoD, Department of Physics) gave a welcoming address to all of the dignitaries and participants in the programme. In her lecture, she emphasised the importance of National Science Day and advised the students to cultivate a scientific mindset. Prof. (Dr.) Raakhee A. S. (Principal) delivered the Presidential and Inaugural addresses.

Dr. Radhakrishnan S.R., Principal Scientist, Environmental Sciences & Biomedical Metrology Division, CSIR-National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi, was invited to give a talk on "Introduction to Standardisation & Quality Assurance in Air Pollution Measurement Equipment" following the inaugural address.

He began the discussion with a quick explanation of why Science Day is celebrated every year on February 28. He emphasised C V Raman's contributions to science through his discovery of the "Raman Effect". Following that, he discussed the concepts quality and standardisation and their significance in today's world. During his discussion, he informed the students about the various standards and SI units in use across the world.

He also provided significant information on quality assurance in air pollution measurement equipment. During the discussion, he described the Air Quality Index and how it is calculated. He also uploaded photos of various equipment used to test the Air Quality Index in his presentation. He closed his remarks by emphasising NPL's contributions to ensuring quality and standardisation across India.

Following the invited discussion, the resource person Dr. Radhakrishnan S.R., launched a video album titled "Innovate India" prepared by three students from I BSc Physics: Ananthu A. P., Sooraj J.S, and Sai Sushanth. The video album was developed as an homage to Indian scientists and their contributions to humanity. The programme concluded with a vote of appreciation offered by Aiswarya Mol N.S. (Assistant Professor, Department of Physics & Standard Club Coordinator).

The invited lecture was highly beneficial to the participants. It taught the students an understanding of quality and standardisation in today's world. The ceremony was also attended by Smt. Jayasree. K. (Assistant Professor, Department of Physics), Shri. Ramesh Chandran B R (Assistant Professor, Department of Physics), and Dr. Vipin C Bose (Assistant Professor, Department of Physics). Along with students from the Department of Physics, students from several other departments at our institution took part in the program. The program attracted 72 students in total.
