Spectrum Seminar 2024-25
The Department of Political Science organized the Spectrum Seminar on Artificial Intelligence in Social Science Research on December 16, 2024, at 2:00 PM.
The seminar commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Rakhee Viswambharan, followed by a vote of thanks delivered by Smt. Aarsha G.S. The event was attended by 50 participants, including faculty members.
The keynote address was delivered by Prof. K. Satheesh Kumar, who began by explaining the concept of Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI refers to the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, particularly computer systems. These processes include learning (acquiring information), reasoning (applying rules to draw conclusions), and self-correction. AI is broadly classified into two types: narrow AI, which is designed for specific tasks, and general AI, which aims to replicate human cognitive abilities across various domains.
Narrow AI is already integrated into everyday life through applications such as virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa, as well as recommendation systems on platforms like Netflix and Amazon. While these technologies perform specialized tasks efficiently, they lack the adaptability and broader cognitive capabilities of human intelligence.
Despite its numerous advantages, AI also raises ethical concerns, including job displacement, data privacy issues, and biases in decision-making. As AI continues to evolve, its influence on industries and society will be profound, necessitating careful deliberation on its responsible and ethical use.
Following the seminar, a student presentation session was conducted in the Seminar Hall. Four students presented their research papers, which were evaluated by a panel of judges. Based on the assessment, Aathmeeya Anil of S5 was awarded first prize, while Heera Ramesh of the first semester secured second place.
